Peruvian indigenous groups of the Amazonian jungle have used Una de Gato for thousands of years. The Shipbo-Conibo infused bark and leaves of "Paotati-mosha" for the treatment of inflammatory disorders, arthritis and diabetes. The Emperors of the Incan Empire regarded "Vilcacora" as a sacred plant and restricted it's use to the Royal family. Subjects found using the sacred Vilcacora were executed by the Incan rulers to help keep the secrets of strength and longevity reserved for the Royalty. During the last century Vilcacora was rediscovered by Polish missionary, Father Edmund Szeliga. The Father used it as "The Miracle Cancer Cure". Today the North American and European pharmaceutical companies buy over 100 tons of "Cat's Claw" per month.

Uncaria tomentosa (Willd) D.C., known commonly as cat's claw, is a large climbing vine growing up to 100 feet into the forest canopy. Branches have strong, 1 inch long woody thorns that resemble the claw of a cat, una de gato in Spanish and cat's claw in English. New leaves are reddish in color turning to dark green with maturity. The vine supports itself on other plants by its "claws" and does not entwine itself around other plants. Leaves have a short life span, are oblong with an elliptic shape up to about 4 inch in length. At about 3 years of age the vine becomes woody and the trunk develops a twisted form.

Cat's claw grows entangled in the thickness of the jungle, growing vertically, horizontally or both depending on what plants are around to support it. Uncaria tomentosa grows at the edge of the high Amazon forests with abundant sunlight at altitudes between 1000 and 2600 feet.

  • Convalescence and general weakness
  • Gonorrhea
  • Dysentery
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Allergies
  • Contraceptive (in highly concentrated doses)
The chemical make up of Cat's Claw has been analyzed by many independent researchers and pharmaceutical companies over the last 30 years. As recent as 2004 a new unknown compound was discovered in an extract from the bark!
Among the known most important compounds identified to date are:

Alkaloids from bark:

  • Rhyncophylline
  • Isorhynchophylline
  • Mitraphylline
  • Hirsuteine
  • Hirsutine
  • Dihydrocorynantheine
  • Isomitraphylline
  • Dihydrocorynantheine-N-Oxide
  • Hirsutine-N-Oxide
  • Pteropodine
  • Speciophylline
  • Isopteropodine
  • Uncarine
  • Isomitraphylline
  • Epicathechin
  • Procianidines

Alkaloids from leaves:

  • Rhyncophylline
  • Isorhynchophylline

Alkaloids From root:

  • Especiophylline
  • Mitraphylline

Other important compounds include:

  • Quinovic acid
  • Glycocides
  • Trypterphenes
  • Esteroidal fractions

Research studies with Uncaria tomentosa undertaken during the last quarter century in Germany, Poland, Italy, Austria, USA and Peru indicate Cat's Claw is a plant with strong anti-inflammatory and immune stimulant properties. But with all the studies the actual active compounds responsible for the curative properties of Cat's Claw have yet to be identified.

Most studies, which lack the results in identifying which chemical contents are responsible for healing, leave little room to refute the traditional ancestral practice of using whole plant infusions. But what most studies do show is that Cat's Claw is beneficial as an Analgesic, Antioxidant, Hipotensie, Inmunostimmulant and Anti-inflammatory agent.
